As John Bush, our Operations Director celebrates 40 years at Polypipe Civils, we get to know 40 things about him. Read this fun, slightly longer interview to get to know John's predictions for 100 years' time, how long he has had his office and how he'd spend a perfect Sunday morning.
What time do you usually wake up in the morning?
6.40.
When you first get out of bed what do you do?
Make a cup of tea.
What do you usually eat for breakfast?
Usually porridge.
How long has this office been your office?
Since 1984, so I've had the office for 35 years.
What’s an item in your office that you’ve had the longest?
My desk, I've had it since I've had the office.
What do you do when you first get to work?
I open the blinds and switch my laptop on.
What was your favourite subject at school?
Maths and geography.
What’s one of your most embarrassing moments?
Recently falling off my bike and not having a helmet on, or my phone with me. Luckily someone stopped to give me a lift home.
How long does it take you to get to work?
On a good day four minutes and on a bad day six.
How do you get to work?
By car.
What is one of the products at Polypipe that doesn’t get enough recognition?
Land drainage.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to a younger person?
Never give up.
What’s your secret to your successful career at Polypipe?
Never giving up and always thinking that the impossible is possible.
How do you measure success?
By the growth of the site
If 40 years ago, you hadn’t have found the factory at Horncastle, where do you think the factory would be today?
We’d looked all the way down the A1 corridor from north Lincolnshire to Stamford. We literally found no other factories to buy or rent.
What do you do for fun?
I garden (sometimes not much fun), cycle, and I like to go to the pictures and eat out.
What’s a favourite film you’ve seen at the cinema recently?
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
What are your favourite films?
Inglorious B*stards, Godfather, Life of Brian.
Do you watch TV?
Yes, mostly drama.
What’s a TV series we should all watch?
Peaky Blinders.
What’s your perfect Sunday morning?
Getting up and having breakfast and going for a bike ride.
What’s something that annoys you?
Outside heaters, they’re annoying because of global warming. Also, Chinese lanterns, they’re dangerous and can cause fires.
What’s something that’s not around anymore that you’d bring back?
I’m always looking forward.
What’s been your biggest achievement at Polypipe?
It's been the teamwork at Horncastle and putting Horncastle on the map, but that has not all been down to me.
What are your predictions for 100 years’ time?
Although the planet seems to be in decline I am sure it will sort itself out one way or another.
What’s one thing that we can do now, to help our planet?
Stop littering.
What’s one element of Polypipe that doesn’t get enough recognition?
The power of the people.
If you could work in another team at Polypipe which team would it be?
I would enjoy the challenge of sales.
If you could change your job, what would you do?
Something in construction.
What’s your favourite holiday destination?
Barbados.
How do you celebrate a birthday?
With friends and family.
What’s the biggest change you’ve noticed at Polypipe in all the time you’ve been here?
We are far more health and safety and environment conscious.
What’s one of your hidden talents?
At my age I have very few hidden talents.
What did you have for dinner last night?
Grilled sea bass.
What football team do you support?
Lincoln and Leeds United.
How would you describe yourself?
Enthusiastic.
How would other people describe you?
Enthusiastic!! Straight to the point.
Would you rather know the history of every object you touched or be able to talk to animals?
Talk to animals.
Would you rather have all traffic lights you approach be green or never have to stand in line again?
Not sure on this one, if all traffic lights were green we would not stand in line.
Would you rather have unlimited international first-class tickets or never have to pay for food at restaurants?
First class tickets.
