Surface Water Solutions

As rain falls on hard standing areas, it will flow with the gradient of the landscape, downhill to a point where it can be captured. This is known as the catchment area.

Sites have predetermined or designed catchment areas and the receiving component is designed to cater for a specifically designed flow of water, such as a roof gutter system, channel or road gully.

The surface water is then transported through a range of thermoplastic structured wall Ridgidrain pipes to and away from a SuDS water management solution before controlled discharge to a natural water course or sewer.

Run-off from both urban and greenfield sites can contain many forms of diffused pollution, including sediment, oils, metals, fertilizer, pesticides and domestic and industrial rubbish. All can have a negative environmental impact on natural watercourses and coastal waters.

They act as filters, removing many pollutants through collection and biodegradation before returning cleansed water to the natural environment.

Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) can be used to first cleanse surface water run-off and then store it both above and below ground. This can be used to re-supply cleansed but non-wholesome water to buildings or landscapes

Rainwater recovery systems, such as Rainstream, can be installed on individual properties or as large scale communal systems within urban and rural developments.

Where ground conditions are suitable, sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) can be used to manage and promote soakaway applications, which allow surface water to infiltrate into the ground, replenishing natural water courses and aquifers.

A soakaway solution can be provided as part of either our Permavoid system (a shallow geocellular solution), or our Polystorm system (a deep geocellular system), allowing surface water run-off to infiltrate into the ground, which would otherwise have been prevented by impermeable developments.

Either solution can be wrapped in a standard geotextile such as Permatex 300, our Polystorm soakaway geotextiles, or a treatment geotextile such as Permafilter. Permafilter has been specifically designed to retain hydrocarbon pollutants and is capable of retaining up to 6L of oil per 10m².

This infiltration process also helps to prevent water sources and soils from drying out, thereby protecting local biodiversity and amenity.
